Nebulizer Machine Guide: Types, Uses and Buying Advice

Compressor vs mesh nebulizer, how a nebulizer works, cleaning steps and what to check before buying one in Bangladesh — with listed prices from ৳230.

Bikarok Editorial Team

A nebulizer converts liquid medication into a fine mist that can be inhaled through a mouthpiece or mask. They are commonly used for respiratory conditions under medical guidance. This guide explains the two main types, how they differ, and what to check when buying one in Bangladesh.

Types of Nebulizer

Compressor nebulizer

A compressor nebulizer uses a small air pump to push air through the medication chamber, turning the liquid into a mist. It is the most common type found in households. It is generally sturdier and less expensive than a mesh nebulizer, but it is bulkier and produces some noise during operation.

Mesh nebulizer

A mesh nebulizer uses a vibrating membrane with tiny holes to create the mist. It is compact, quiet and portable, which makes it convenient for travel. Mesh units are typically lighter and more expensive than compressor units.

What to Check Before Buying

  • Medication compatibility. Not every device works with every medication. Confirm with your health professional that the device you are considering is suitable for what has been prescribed.
  • Mask vs mouthpiece. Masks suit children and anyone who cannot form a good mouthpiece seal; mouthpieces deliver mist more directly for cooperative adults.
  • Particle size. Manufacturer specifications state the nebulisation rate and particle size distribution, which determine where the mist deposits in the airways.
  • Kit contents. Check whether the mask, tubing, medication cup and mouthpiece are included or sold separately.
  • Noise and portability. Compressor units make noise; mesh units are quieter and easier to carry.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Correct cleaning prevents residue build-up and cross-contamination. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific model as the primary reference. General practice for home nebulizers:

  1. Wash your hands before handling the medication cup, mask or mouthpiece.
  2. After each use, disassemble the parts that contacted the medication and rinse them in clean water.
  3. Allow all parts to air-dry completely on a clean surface before reassembling.
  4. Replace tubing, masks and mouthpieces at the interval the manufacturer specifies — they are consumable parts.
  5. Do not submerge the compressor unit itself in water; wipe the exterior instead.

Never share a nebulizer mask or mouthpiece between people.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Nebulizers are used to deliver medication that has been prescribed for a specific condition. Whether one is appropriate, which medication to use and how often are decisions for a qualified health professional. If breathing difficulties are severe or sudden, seek emergency medical care rather than relying on a home device.
